What Are Stems in Music Production?

Stems are individual instrument tracks from a mixed song - vocals, drums, bass, and harmonic instruments. Stem separation uses AI to extract these elements from a finished stereo mix, reverse-engineering the original multitrack recording.

The AI analyzes audio in time and frequency domains to separate overlapping instruments like bass guitar and kick drum, or piano and guitar chords that share similar frequencies.

How Modern Stem Separation Works

Old methods used phase cancellation and frequency filtering, creating artifacts and poor results. Modern AI uses deep learning trained on thousands of songs.
